Modern Authentication: Approved Email Client List

Summary

A list of UNIT's approved email clients as well as recommended solutions for clients without Modern Authorization capability.

Body

Overview

Microsoft has implemented Modern Authentication, a new, more secure means of authenticating users who sign into Office 365 applications, such as Microsoft Outlook or Exchange Online.

Approved Email Clients with Modern Authentication

UNIT Service Desk recommends that you make use of the three following UNIT-approved email clients that all support Modern Authentication:

  1. Check your email via Outlook on the Web (OWA - https://outlook.office.com/) using your VUID credentials
  2. Configure your Office 365 ProPlus Outlook Client on Windows or Mac (can be downloaded from https://office.villanova.edu/)
  3. Configure your Outlook Client on your Android or iOS device (can be found in the Google Play Store or Apple App Store)

If you are using one of the three UNIT-approved clients listed above (and are regularly applying security updates), you should already be using Modern Authentication. Please note that UNIT only officially supports the three email clients listed above. While you can manually configure a plethora of other clients (some listed below), UNIT may be unable to assist you in troubleshooting or configuring those clients. If you choose to use other clients, always be certain to keep them updated to the latest versions.

Other Email Clients and Modern Authentication

Please see the table below for a list of email clients that do not have built-in Modern Authorization capability and are NOT officially supported for use. If you are using one of the email clients found in the table below, you may need to upgrade or change the email client you currently use before October 31, 2022 (recommended solutions for each client are also included below).
