MurphyCares Simulation has been widely adopted as a training tool across medical and nursing schools, hospitals and government agencies. By replicating real-world scenarios, simulation offers hands-on, technology-driven experiences that enable students and practitioners to refine their skills in a controlled environment. However, participating in simulation can be anxiety-provoking. Preparing student nurses through simulated experiences to navigate challenging patient situations with reduced anxiety is our goal, as it will train nurses who can maintain focus and efficiency and provide more attentive and empathetic care to improve patient outcomes.\r\n\r\nWe are partnering with Murphy Cares, LLC, to pilot the use of their digital pet therapy technology to test if it decreases Villanova students’ anxiety during their mental health care simulation experience. Murphy Cares has created a novel digital application that simulates live pet therapy with active gaming elements, providing wellness support that enables users, in this case nursing students, to receive the benefits of pet therapy—increased oxytocin and serotonin—by interacting with dogs through a digital interface. \r\n \r\nWhile this therapy has demonstrated favorable outcomes in decreasing anxiety in diverse populations, research is limited related to its use in decreasing anxiety within an educational setting. Villanova will take the lead in testing this technology’s effectiveness in an academic environment. We aim to improve student learning during simulation so that the students graduate better prepared to deliver care for those experiencing mental health challenges. Project expenses include the use of the digital anxiety measurement instrument and IT support to manage the application.
