Overview

Villanova University is a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) campus. All faculty, staff, students, and guests are required to bring their laptop, device power supply, and AV adapter to connect to campus AV systems. Every teaching station has a power outlet at the lectern. Many newer laptops (especially Apple) have limited ports, so an AV adapter may be required if you need to connect multiple devices simultaneously (e.g., classroom display, cameras/microphones, interactive pen display, presentation clicker, USB peripherals, etc.). For best results, use an adapter made by the manufacturer of your laptop. If you have any questions, please call the Classroom Support Hotline at 610-519-7777, option 2.

Wired AV Connections In Classrooms

All classroom AV systems have an easy color-coded cable system. Cables and touch screens are coded using the following colors:

  • Blue – USB-C Supports laptop audio and video. Provides power/charging in select locations.
  • Orange – HDMI Supports laptop audio and video.
  • Yellow - Mini DisplayPort Supports laptop audio and video. This cable will be phased out starting in 2025.
  • Purple – USB Supports classroom cameras and microphones for hybrid, if equipped.
  • Brown – USB Classroom Wacom Interactive Pen Display, if equipped.

Connectivity Tips

Have you ever experienced a problem getting your laptop or mobile device to display on the classroom projector/display? It is important to run OS updates and reboot your device periodically. A reboot can resolve many classroom audio and video issues. Additionally, the connection sequence when connecting to an AV system is also important. Below is the recommended sequence for connecting your laptop/device to AV systems:

  1. Make sure the device and AV system are turned off.
  2. Connect your device to the AV system.
  3. Turn on the AV system.
  4. Turn on your device.
  5. Use the proper key commands to duplicate or extend your device to the classroom display.
