Overview
This guide provides the University timelines for course access, and outlines how instructors can provide extended access to their Brightspace courses to a student with an incomplete grade. All open and close dates for all courses are listed in Banner. Courses in Brightspace will open seven (7) days prior to the Banner listed start date. Brightspace courses will close 25 days after the Banner listed close date.
Instructions
Students who receive an Incomplete grade may need additional time to finish the required work. For students who need extended access to Brightspace, the steps are as follows:
- Enter the Brightspace course where the student who needs additional course access time is enrolled.
- On the blue course navigation bar, hover your cursor over “More” then select “Classlist.”

- Locate the student who needs extended access. Check the box next to their name and click the “Enrollment” button.

- Click the drop-down arrow next to “Select New Role,” click “Incomplete Learner,” then click “Save.”

- The student has now been granted extended access to your course as an “Incomplete Learner.” This allows the student access to the course beyond the standard student course availability dates noted above.
Note: You may need to apply special access settings to course content/quizzes/assignments to ensure that the student has access to specific items within the course. All Incomplete Learners will automatically be toggled back to their original Learner role and course access will once again be restricted once the grade deadline for incompletes has passed.
