Overview

What is it?

Piazza is a social Q&A platform designed for academic courses. Students post questions (by name or anonymously), collaborate to build wiki-style answers, and receive follow-up responses from instructors and TAs. Faculty use Piazza as a central, searchable hub for all course questions — reducing repetitive email and increasing student participation outside of class.

Piazza supports a wiki-style answer format where multiple students can contribute to a single response and instructors can endorse the final answer. The platform supports LaTeX, syntax-highlighted code blocks, images, and file attachments — making it well-suited for STEM, CS, and quantitative courses.

Who is it for?

Faculty: Create a Piazza class for each course, configure discussion settings, monitor all student posts, endorse correct answers, and track which students are active participants. Post instructor notes, poll students, and receive anonymous feedback.

Students: Post questions about course content, homework, or logistics — by name or anonymously. View and contribute to answers from classmates. Access Piazza through the Brightspace course link without a separate login.

Access

Through the Piazza link inside your Villanova Brightspace course (single sign-on via LTI). Piazza can also be accessed directly at piazza.com. When accessed via the Brightspace LTI link, no separate username and password are required for returning users.

Authentication

Separate Piazza account required on first use. When clicking the Piazza LTI link in Brightspace for the first time, users are prompted to create or confirm a Piazza account using their Villanova email. After this one-time step, subsequent logins from the Brightspace link are automatic via SSO.

Getting Started / Quick Start

Faculty / Instructor Setup

In Brightspace: Content > Unit > Add Existing > External Tool Activity > Piazza. If Piazza is not available, contact Learning Technologies to confirm the tool is enabled.
Click the Piazza link in your course. On first launch, create a new Piazza class or link to an existing one. Confirm course name, term, and class settings.
Configure Piazza class settings: folder structure, anonymous posting rules, and participation tracking/gradebook sync.

Student Setup

Click the Piazza link inside your Villanova Brightspace course. On first access, create a Piazza account or confirm an existing one using your Villanova email.
After this one-time setup, you are automatically enrolled. Future visits from the Brightspace link will sign you in automatically. Configure your email notification preferences to stay informed without being overwhelmed.
