Overview
This article explains how to access Claude with your Villanova account and get started using its core features.
Claude is a generative AI assistant from Anthropic that can support tasks such as brainstorming, drafting and revising content, summarizing information, working with documents, coding, and analyzing complex ideas.
Villanova faculty and staff with a Claude license can access Claude using Villanova Single Sign-On (SSO).
Requirements
- An active Villanova Claude license.
- Your Villanova account credentials.
- Access to a supported web browser.
Important: Claude is currently approved for use with Public data only. Do not enter Private or Restricted Villanova data into Claude. Review Villanova's Data Classification Standards before entering University information or uploading files.
Sign In to Claude
- Go to claude.ai.
- Select Log in.
- Enter your Villanova email address.
- Continue through the Villanova Single Sign-On process.
- After signing in, you will be taken to Claude.
Start a Conversation
Claude works through natural-language instructions called prompts.
- Select New chat, if needed.
- Enter your question or instructions in the message field.
- Select Send.
- Continue the conversation by asking follow-up questions, providing additional context, or asking Claude to revise its response.
You can use Claude to:
- Brainstorm ideas.
- Draft or revise content.
- Summarize Public information.
- Compare options or approaches.
- Explain concepts.
- Analyze Public documents or data.
- Create or troubleshoot code.
- Develop plans, outlines, or workflows.
For better results, provide relevant context, explain what you want Claude to accomplish, and identify any requirements or constraints.
Upload Files
Claude can work with supported files that you add to a conversation.
- Open a new or existing conversation.
- Select the + button near the message field.
- Select the option to add a file or photo.
- Choose the file you want to upload.
- Enter instructions describing what you want Claude to do with the file.
Before uploading a file: Confirm that its contents are classified as Public under Villanova's Data Classification Standards.
Use Projects
Projects provide a workspace for organizing related conversations, instructions, and reference materials.
Projects can be useful for ongoing work where you want Claude to use the same context or instructions across multiple conversations.
- Select Projects from the Claude navigation.
- Select New Project.
- Enter a name for the project.
- Add project instructions or reference materials as needed.
- Start conversations within the project.
Any information added to a Project must also comply with Villanova's Public data only requirement.
Review Claude's Responses
Generative AI can produce incorrect, incomplete, outdated, or misleading information. Always review Claude's output before using or sharing it.
When using Claude:
- Verify important information using authoritative sources.
- Review citations and references.
- Check calculations and generated code.
- Review generated content before distributing or publishing it.
- Apply your own professional or academic judgment.
- Follow Villanova policies and applicable course requirements when using generative AI.
Villanova faculty and staff who do not currently have a Claude license can request one through the Anthropic Claude service in the Villanova Service and Support Portal.
- Go to the Anthropic Claude service page .
- Select Submit a Claude License Request.
- Complete the request form.
- Select the appropriate license level.
- Provide the requested departmental approval and billing information.
- Submit the request.
Claude license requests require approval from the user's finance manager or director and an index fund for departmental billing.

Both license levels provide access to the same Claude features and models.
License costs are billed to the user's department. UTS purchases Claude licenses during scheduled bulk purchases, so access may not be available immediately after submitting a request.
