Overview
If you have created a narrated PowerPoint presentation with recorded slide timings, narration, webcam video, or animations, you can export the presentation as an MP4 video file. You can then upload the MP4 file to Mediasite or another media hosting platform to share with students or other audiences.
This article explains how to convert a recorded PowerPoint presentation into a video and prepare it for upload to Mediasite.
Suggested Use Cases
Exporting a PowerPoint presentation as an MP4 video is useful when you need to:
- Share a recorded lecture through Mediasite.
- Deliver narrated course content asynchronously.
- Submit a presentation that requires voice narration.
- Create a video version of a slide presentation for wider distribution.
- Preserve slide timings, animations, webcam recordings, and narration in a single video file.
Before You Begin
Before exporting your presentation:
- Ensure your presentation has been saved to your local device as a PowerPoint (.pptx) file.
- Complete any narration, webcam recording, slide timings, and animation recordings.
- Save any recent edits before starting the export process.
Instructions
1. Download a local copy of the completed PowerPoint presentation (.pptx) and make sure all your changes have been saved.
2. Select File Export Create a Video. Note: In some versions of PowerPoint, this option may appear as Recording Export to Video.
3. Verify that Full HD (1080p) is selected for the video quality (recommended for instructional media).
4. Verify that Use Recorded Timings and Narrations is selected. If you choose not to use recorded timings and narrations, your presentation may export without audio or recorded presentation elements (e.g., narration audio, webcam recording, slide timings, and/or slide animations and transitions).
5. Click the Create Video button.
6. Next, select a save location, confirm MPEG-4 Video (*.mp4) is identified as the file type, enter a file name, and select Save. PowerPoint will begin rendering the presentation and creating the MP4 video file.
📌 Note: Export time varies depending on the length of the presentation, the number of animations, and the amount of recorded media included.
Transferring the Exported Video to Mediasite
After your MP4 file has been created, you can upload it to your Mediasite account for hosting and sharing using the instructions in the article, Mediasite: Upload a Video File to MyMediasite.
Known Issues & Troubleshooting
- No Narration Appears in the Exported Video: Verify that Use Recorded Timings and Narrations was selected before creating the video. Re-export the presentation if necessary.
- Webcam Video Does Not Appear: Confirm that a webcam recording was included during PowerPoint recording and that recorded timings and narrations were enabled during export.
- Video Export Is Taking a Long Time: Large presentations with high-resolution media, extensive animations, or long recordings may require additional processing time. Let PowerPoint finish exporting before closing the application.
- Export Option Is Missing: Some menu locations vary by PowerPoint version. Look for either:

- Recording Export to Video
