Dropbox to OneDrive Migration

Overview

Beginning on Sept. 15, the University will start migrating existing individual Dropbox users to Microsoft OneDrive as the primary cloud file storage solution.

Why is Villanova making this change?

As part of Villanova’s ongoing cloud strategy and service rationalization efforts, and in support of the TechNova strategic plan announced this summer, Technology Services is working to consolidate our cloud storage solutions to improve security, streamline collaboration, and lower costs. As a result, Dropbox will no longer be supported as a cloud storage option at Villanova.

How will this change impact me?

During your designated migration period, please refrain from adding or modifying any files in Dropbox. Your migrated files will be placed in a folder named “Dropbox_Migration” in the main folder of your OneDrive. Files shared with villanova.edu accounts will remain. However, for external collaborators, you will need to review and adjust the settings, as they must have a Microsoft account to regain access.

When will the migration occur?

Individual Dropbox users who do not utilize Dropbox for shared departmental file storage will have their files migrated in phases beginning on Sept. 15. Migrations will occur on Fridays, starting at 5 p.m., and are expected to be completed by 8 a.m. the following Monday.

While it is expected that the migration will be completed within this time period, it will not be considered finalized until you receive a confirmation email from Technology Services.

Additionally, Technology Services will contact departments that utilize Dropbox for shared departmental file storage at a later date to coordinate a migration.
