Body

Overview

What is it?

W. W. Norton & Company is an independent academic publisher whose digital learning tools accompany its textbook catalog across disciplines including psychology, history, economics, biology, writing, and more. Norton's primary digital tools are:

InQuizitive: Norton's adaptive learning tool. Presents students with questions calibrated to their current knowledge, guides them toward learning objectives, and helps them arrive at class better prepared. Grades sync automatically to the Brightspace gradebook.

Smartwork: An auto-graded online homework system for quantitative and science disciplines. Provides answer-specific feedback, hints, and solutions. Grades sync automatically to the Brightspace gradebook.

Norton Ebook (Illumine Reader): An interactive, mobile-accessible eTextbook with annotation, note-taking, and offline reading features. Available as a standalone purchase or bundled with InQuizitive or Smartwork.

All Norton tools are delivered through the Norton Deep Linking Tool (DLT) — an LTI 1.3 integration that connects Norton content directly to a Villanova Brightspace course, enabling single sign-on and automatic grade passback to the Brightspace gradebook.

Who is it for?

Faculty: Use the Norton Deep Linking Tool to deploy InQuizitive activities, Smartwork assignments, and Ebook links as graded or ungraded LTI links directly in your Villanova Brightspace course. Grades sync automatically; no manual export needed.

Students: Access Norton InQuizitive, Smartwork, and Ebook through Brightspace course links. Create a Norton account using your Villanova email on first access. Purchase access via an access code from the Villanova Bookstore, a standalone digital purchase, or Inclusive Access delivery.

Access

Students access materials direct through the LTI link installed by the professor OR through the link generated by the publisher and shared by the instructor. Students must use school email address when registering at publisher's website.

Authentication

Separate Norton account required. Faculty and students create a Norton account using their Villanova email address. After this one-time account creation and Brightspace linking step (which happens automatically when clicking a Norton DLT link from within a Villanova Brightspace course), subsequent sessions are handled via SSO from the course link.

LMS Integration

Brightspace (D2L).

Cost

Cost to students for access varies by course and adoption model. Please see the textbook access program page for more information https://www.villanova.edu/university/teacher-scholars/about/textbook-access.html
