Mediasite: Using Mediasite Analytics (View, Interpret, Export)

Overview

This article explains how to view, interpret, and export viewer analytics from a Mediasite presentation. Mediasite analytics provide detailed insights into audience engagement with your video content. The analytics include data on individual viewers (when available), quiz results (when available), heat maps showing viewer attention and trends, and downloadable reports for documentation or grading.

Common objectives include tracking viewership metrics - such as the number of views and viewing duration - downloading viewer data, identifying which individuals watched a lecture, grading individual quiz results, and determining the devices used to view the videos.

Instructions

NOTE: If your presentation is viewable to Everyone, each viewer will be listed as "Anonymous" in your analytics report. If you need to collect individual usernames for attendance tracking, you should change the presentation's viewing permission to My Organization. For public content that requires tracking viewership, please contact support@villanova.edu to set up a registration page and password.

1. Log into your MyMediasite account: https://vums-web.villanova.edu/mediasite/mymediasite/

2. Select the Mediasite video presentation you want to edit by clicking its title or thumbnail image.

3. Select View Analytics from the right-hand navigation bar to open the "Presentation Analytics" page.

4. After the Presentation Analytics page finishes loading, navigate to the tabs for the specific data you need. You can use the refresh button to reload the data:

  • Dashboard Tab: Displays performance data such as total views, peak connections, viewing trends (hot spots), top users, and platforms used.
  • Who's Watching Tab: Displays real-time viewing statistics, including current viewers, their authentication status, and the platforms they are using.
  • Quiz Tab (only if applicable): Displays grade posting status in Brightspace, student name, date/time the quiz taken, date/time the quiz was submitted, the percentage answered correctly (out of 100%), the total time spent watching the presentation (hh:mm:ss), and the amount of the presentation watched by a user based on total duration. This tab will not appear if you have not published a quiz to the presentation.

5. Click the Download Report drop-down menu in the top right-hand corner of the page to export an Excel spreadsheet containing all viewing data for this presentation. For assistance in interpreting your analytics data, a full list of report definitions is available on Mediasite's Report Definitions page.

To achieve the best results, open the Excel program first, then open your downloaded spreadsheet within it.

Known Issues & Troubleshooting

  • I use this video every year, so there is a lot of viewing data. How can I see only the current term's views? By design, when you download the report, it includes all viewing data from all time. To see only the views from the current term, you must use standard spreadsheet filtering to customize your view. If you really need viewing data purged from a presentation, please contact support@villanova.edu.
  • My downloaded analytics report won't open! To achieve the best results, open Microsoft Excel first, then open your downloaded spreadsheet in it. Sometimes, Excel and XML files aren't set to open in Excel automatically.
  • How is "coverage" different from "Time Watched? Coverage refers to the amount of the presentation watched by a user. For example, a user opens a presentation and watches the first 30 minutes of a presentation, pauses the video, seeks back to the start, and watches for 40 minutes. The coverage for this user is 40 minutes. In other words, the user spent a total of 70 minutes watching the presentation (total time watched), but in that time, the user only “covered” the first 40 minutes of the presentation.
