Add LinkedIn Learning Content to Blackboard

Tags linkedin

The LinkedIn Learning Tool within Blackboard allows you to search for LinkedIn Learning videos and add them to your Blackboard course.  Instructions are provided below.

Two Important Notes:

  • When LinkedIn Learning videos are added to Blackboard, a Grade Center column associated with the LinkedIn Learning video is automatically added to your Grade Center and visible to your students.  Please read Step 6 below on how to configure/hide this Grade Center column.
  • If the LinkedIn Learning course you selected contains built-in knowledge checks, please follow Step 7 below so that the knowledge checks are visible to your students.

How to add LinkedIn Learning Videos to Blackboard

1. Enter your Blackboard course and access a content area where you wish to insert the LinkedIn Learning video(s).

2. Place your cursor over "Build Content" and click "LinkedIn Learning" from the drop down menu.

3. A new screen will open and you will be redirected into LinkedIn Learning. Use the search function to find content. In this example, we searched for "Microsoft Excel Training." Courses contain a collection of videos, while Learning Paths contain a collection of courses. You have the option of adding full Learning Paths, Courses or individual videos.

4. To select a Learning Path or Course, click the "Add" button on the right side of the screen. To select an individual video, click the drop down arrow under "Course contents", select the lesson and click "Add" next to the individual video. In this example we selected the "Working with dates and times" video found under the "Entering Data" lesson. Multiple videos can be selected by clicking the "Add" button next to each. After selecting the desired videos (or Courses/Learning Paths), click the "Confirm" button in the bottom right of the screen to add them to your Blackboard Course.

5. Once you confirm the addition of the LinkedIn Learning content, you will be redirected back to Blackboard. You will see a message “Success! The tool provider content was added to your course. Close this window and refresh your course to view the new content.”  Close that specific window, and then refresh your screen to see the recently added content. To watch the content, click on the link title. To edit the settings of the content, click the down arrow and then "Edit."

6.  (Optional - Content Settings) By default, any content added to Blackboard through the LinkedIn Learning integration will create a corresponding Grade Center column with a score value of 100. Once the student begins viewing the content, a yellow in-progress icon will appear in the Blackboard Grade Center. The icon will remain until all of the content is viewed, at which time the student will be awarded the full points possible (100 in this case). If you wish to change the point value of the content, you can do so by editing the Points Possible in the content settings. If you wish to make the content ungraded, simply change the Points Possible to zero. For ungraded, zero-point LinkedIn Learning content, it is also recommended that you hide the associated Grade Center column from students. To hide a Grade Center column from students, access the full Blackboard Grade Center and locate the column. In the header, click the drop down arrow and select the option "Hide from students (on/off)".  An icon showing a black dot with a red slash will then appear in the column header, indicting that it is hidden from students.

7. (Optional - Content Settings) Some LinkedIn Learning Courses contain periodic knowledge checks in the form of multiple choice questions. The scores for these knowledge checks are not transmitted back to Blackboard, but they can be helpful to students to reinforce the concepts presented in the material they have viewed. If the content you added contains knowledge checks, and you wish for them to be displayed to students, you will need to set the content link in Blackboard to "Open in a New Window" (by default this option is set to "No"). You can change this by finding your LinkedIn path/course/video content link in Blackboard, clicking the down arrow, and then "Edit."  Scroll towards the bottom of the screen and find the “Open in New Window” selection. Select "Yes" then click "Submit."
