October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and Villanova is joining the global effort to help you stay safe online. This year, we're highlighting the Core 4 simple habits you can build to reduce your risk. Cybersecurity doesn't have to be intimidating—small actions make a big impact!
Use at least 15 characters to keep your account more secure.
- Protect your online accounts by creating a different password for each and every one.
- Download a password manager to remember and protect your credentials in one app.
Multi-factor authentication goes by many names: MFA, two-factor authentication, 2FA, two-step verification.
- MFA adds an extra layer of security to block unwanted access to your online accounts, even if you password is compromised.
- Verifying your login via Duo only takes a second and is much better than getting hacked.
Software updates fix general software problems, add new features, and provide security patches against the latest threats.
- Turn on automatic updates whenever available; if that's not an option, set yourself a calendar reminder to check for updates every quarter.
- Only download updates from original sources. Even a copy from your peers could contain unknown malware.
Cyber criminals manipulate your emotions to get what they want. Be skeptical of unsolicited requests using urgent language or offering something too good to be true.
- Think before you click. A few extra seconds to assess your new messages can save you from falling for a cyber scam.
- If you receive a suspicious email to your Villanova account, report it using the Report Phishing button.
