Classroom Lecture Capture (CLC): Getting Started

Mediasite is a lecture capture tool available to anyone with an active Villanova account. Mediasite recordings can be created through automated lecture capture with Hardware Recorders at select on-campus locations, the Mediasite Capture screen-recording tool, or by uploading external video files through your MyMediasite account.

Mediasite content can be posted on your LMS course page, embedded on a web page, or shared with your audience via a direct link.

A standard Mediasite CLC recording captures the video from the room using a ceiling- or wall-mounted camera, audio from the podium or ceiling microphones, and any screen sharing displayed on the front screen. These recordings start and stop automatically according to the course schedule in Banner, eliminating the need for the instructor to control the recording process manually.

The image above displays a standard lecture recording. On one side, there is an
enlarged screen-sharing component; on the other, viewers can see the speaker
and the classroom. During playback, viewers can toggle between the two feeds
to focus on whichever they prefer. Limited customization of this layout is
available upon request.

The sign below is displayed in classrooms equipped with Mediasite recording capabilities. Please note: classrooms without a Mediasite sticker only have Zoom recording capabilities.

According to the program policy, all on-ground Law courses conducted in John F. Scarpa Hall are automatically recorded using Mediasite. Law faculty do not need to opt in for this process. However, if any Law instructors wish to exclude their courses from the automatic recording schedule, they must seek approval from their Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

Step 1 of 3: Confirm your course is eligible

Confirm that your course is taking place in an eligible location by referring to the current list here: List of Classroom Lecture Capture (CLC) Rooms

Step 2 of 3: Submit an opt-in request

To record an entire semester of an on-ground course using Mediasite, the instructor designated as the "Primary" must submit an opt-in request at: https://villanova.edu/recordmyclass

If you log in and no courses appear: (1) Your course may be held in a location ineligible for Mediasite recording, or (2) You may not be the instructor listed as the "Primary" in Banner.

Please refer to the information below when navigating the site:

	Single-click the camera icon next to a course to record it.
	Single-click the "Record All" button to record the complete list of available courses.
	Single-click the “X” button to cancel an opt-in request you submitted previously.
	This visibility toggle appears before you confirm each recording. If toggled on, your recordings will be set to "Viewable" after upload. To keep your recordings private, please leave this toggle as-is. If you miss this toggle during opt-in, you can also request this adjustment here: Submit Request to Make Lecture Recordings Automatically Available to Students

 

Step 3 of 3: Review your confirmation email

After you submit your opt-in request, you will receive an automated confirmation email from CIT@villanova.edu at your University email address. If you are scheduling a last-minute recording for a class starting within the hour, please contact Multimedia Technologies directly to ensure it can be accommodated.

Please keep your confirmation email(s) for future reference. It will include important information, such as your Mediasite channel link, the date your recordings will be automatically deleted, and other helpful resources for instructors.

Please contact CIT@villanova.edu as soon as possible if you do not receive a confirmation email within 12 hours of submitting an opt-in request.

Sharing your classroom lecture recordings can enhance your students’ overall learning experience in a variety of significant ways, including:

• Assistance with learning support (e.g., absences due to illness or emergency, non-native English speakers, students granted LSS accommodations)
• Examination review
• Reinforcement of complex topics through repeated listening
• Encouraging students to engage in class discussions rather than passive note-taking
• Supplement existing course materials

It is strongly recommended that you inform your students in the course syllabus if the class is being recorded, regardless of whether you plan to provide lecture recordings.

REMINDER: Opting into Classroom Lecture Capture does not automatically share recordings with students; instructors must still provide a link to the recorded content.

After instructors have opted into Classroom Lecture Capture (CLC) for their course, they must: 1.) set the permissions on their recording(s), and 2.) choose a method of distribution that best fits their students' needs and how they'd like to use recorded content in their course.
