Brightspace: How to Bulk Edit Grades and Feedback

Overview

This article will explain how to use the Bulk Edit feature in the Grades tool. This is a good option for updating Grade Items across categories, inputting the same grades for multiple students at a time, or offering the same feedback to multiple students. 

Instructions

To bulk edit grade items and categories:

  1. At the top of your course page, from the blue course navigation bar, click Grades.
  2. From the Grades tool, click the Manage Grades tab. 

  1. Select the specific items you want to edit by clicking the check box beside the grade item or category name, or click the Select all rows check box at the top of the column. 
  2. Click Bulk Edit to open the editing page. If you do not select anything, the system will prompt you to select an item or category.

  1. In the Edit window, edit any of the following; 
  • For grade categories: Name, Short Name, and Can Exceed. 

  • For grade items: Name, Short Name, Max Points, Weight (if the category is not set to be evenly distributed), Bonus, Can Exceed, Grade Scheme, and Category. 

  1. When you have made the appropriate changes, click the blue button Save.

To bulk grade items across multiple students:

  1. At the top of your course page, from the blue course navigation bar, click Grades.
  2. From the Grades tool, click the Manage Grades tab. 

  1. Find the specific item you want to grade and click the caret beside the item to open a short menu. Select Enter Grades to open the Grade Item page. 
  2. On the Grade Item page, select the names of the students you want to grade in the far left column. Select Set Grades.

  1. A pop-up window will appear; enter the grade for the selected students and click the blue button Save.
  2. Be sure to click the Save and Close blue button at the bottom of the next screen to save your work. Failure to do so will result in the grades not getting applied to every learner you selected previously.  
  3. A pop-up confirmation window will appear; select Yes to save your work. 

  1. If you would like to add the same feedback for multiple students, on the Grade Item page, select the students you want to give feedback. Select Add Feedback.

  1. A pop-up window will appear. Enter the feedback for the selected students and click the blue button Save.
  2. Be sure to click the Save and Close blue button at the bottom of the next screen to save your work. Failure to do so will result in the grades not getting applied to every learner you selected previously.  
  3. A pop-up confirmation window will appear; select Yes to save your work.
