Dell Laptop to Classroom AV Connection Guide
Quick Reference for Faculty
Requirements
Modern Dell laptops (like the Latitude 7440) typically include HDMI ports and/or USB-C ports. You'll use an HDMI (orange) or USB-C (blue) cable, located on top of the lectern, to connect to classroom projectors.
DELL LAPTOP PORTS
Look for ports on the left/right sides of your Dell laptop
• HDMI Port: Trapezoid-shaped port
• USB-C Ports: Small, oval-shaped ports
Instructions
Dell Laptop → HDMI or USB-C Cable → Projector
- Connect the HDMI or USB-C cable to the appropriate port on your Dell laptop
- Using the touch panel, turn on the projector and select the correct HDMI or USB-C input if necessary
Mirror Your Display
To display the same content on your laptop and the projector:
Quick Method: Press Windows Key + P to open projection options
- Duplicate: Shows the same content on both screens (recommended for presentations)
Manual Method: Right-click on the desktop → Display settings → Multiple displays → Select “Duplicate”
Select Audio Output
To play audio through classroom speakers:
Quick Method: Click the speaker icon in the system tray → Click the arrow (>) next to the volume slider → Select "AV System”, “Extron” or the connected display device
Manual Method: Settings → System → Sound → Choose output device → Select “AV System", “Extron” or the connected display device
⚠️ Always test audio before class starts!⚠️
Quick Troubleshooting
No picture?
- Ensure all connections are secure
- Verify projector is on
- Select the correct HDMI or USB-C input on the touch panel
- Press Windows Key + P and select a display mode
No sound?
- Confirm “AV System", “Extron” or the connected display device is the selected audio output (click speaker icon)
- Check classroom volume is up on touch panel
- Ensure audio is not muted on your laptop
Display issues?
- Try a different port (HDMI vs USB-C)
- Disconnect and reconnect cable
- Restart your device while connected to the AV system
