Brightspace: Explore Rubrics

Overview

This article explains the purpose of the Rubrics tool in Brightspace and highlights the main options available when creating and managing rubrics in a course. Use the Rubrics tool to create rubrics within a course and associate them with assessments and grade items. Rubrics can help standardize evaluation and make it easier to provide consistent feedback to students.

Instructions

  1. In your course, click on Course Admin and then Rubrics.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  2. On the Rubrics page, review the available options:
    • New Rubric creates a new rubric for the course.
    • The Actions menu can be used to Edit Options, Preview, Set Status, View Statistics, Copy, or Delete a rubric.
    • The rubric list displays details such as the Description, Type, Scoring Method, and Status for each rubric.
  3. When creating or reviewing a rubric, choose the appropriate Status:
    • Draft indicates the rubric is still being created and is not available for new associations.
    • Published allows the rubric to be associated with course activities.
    • Archived removes the rubric from default search results and prevents new associations, while preserving previous evaluations and existing associations.
  4. Select the rubric Type that best fits your assessment:
    • Analytic rubrics use multiple criteria and levels of achievement.
    • Holistic rubrics use a single overall criterion with predefined achievement levels.
  5. Select the appropriate Scoring Method for the rubric:
    • No Score uses text-only performance levels.
    • Points uses point values for achievement levels and is available for analytic rubrics.
    • Custom Points allows different point values for each criterion and is available for analytic rubrics.
    • Percentages is available for holistic rubrics.
  6. Set Rubric Visibility based on when you want students to see the rubric:
    • Rubric is always visible to learners
    • Rubric is hidden until feedback published
    • Rubric is never visible to learners
  • Note:
    • Once a published rubric is associated with an activity, you cannot change the rubric name, description, levels, or criteria.
    • If you change a rubric to Archived, previous evaluations remain available, but the rubric cannot be added to new assessment activities.
    • If a rubric is hidden until feedback is published, students see the rubric and feedback only after the feedback is published.
