Mediasite: Downloading Transcripts From a Channel

Overview

Mediasite transcripts provide a text-based version of the spoken content in a video presentation. Downloading a transcript can help you review lecture content, search for key concepts, create study notes, and access course materials in an alternative format.

This article explains how students can download available transcripts from Mediasite presentations found on a channel page and includes accessibility considerations for screen reader users and individuals with visual impairments.

Before You Begin

📌Note: Transcript downloads are only available when:

If you do not see transcript options, they may not be available for that recording.

Instructions

I. Open the Channel

1. Navigate to the Mediasite channel link provided by your instructor.

2. After the page loads, locate the video you need to download transcripts for. If there are many videos, you may need to use the page navigation at the bottom of the screen.

II. Download the Transcript

1. Click the triple dots (â‹®) in the bottom right-hand corner of the Mediasite presentation and select Downloads from the menu that pops up.

3. Next, click on the provided Transcript (.txt) hyperlink, and save the transcript file to your local device when prompted.

III. Open the Downloaded File

1. Open the Downloads folder on your device, or the folder where you saved your transcript file. If you're unsure, reopen your web browser and navigate to the Downloads section to see where it was saved.

2. Open the saved transcript file with your preferred screen reader or other word processing program.

Accessibility Considerations

For Screen Reader Users

  • Transcript files can typically be accessed using screen readers such as JAWS, NVDA, or VoiceOver.
  • Downloading the transcript allows easier navigation through content than repeatedly seeking within a video.
  • Use your screen reader's find/search functionality to locate keywords or topics within the transcript.

For Users with Low Vision

  • Open the transcript in a word processor or text editor.
  • Increase font size and zoom settings as needed.
  • Adjust contrast settings to meet your viewing preferences.
  • Use operating system accessibility tools such as Magnifier (Windows) or Zoom (macOS).

For Students Who Require Alternative Formats

If a transcript is unavailable or inaccessible, contact your instructor or Learning Support Services for assistance obtaining an alternative format.

Known Issues & Troubleshooting

  • I do not see an option to Download Transcript: This can happen if the presentation does not include captions or transcripts, or access has not been enabled by the content owner. Try refreshing the webpage or reopening the presentation in another supported browser (list here). If this still doesn't work, contact your instructor to inquire if a transcript needs to be enabled.
  • The transcript file downloaded but will not open: Try opening the file with a different text editor or word processor, and/or saving and downloading the transcript again. Confirming the download completed successfully and wasn't interrupted or canceled.
  • My screen reader is not reading the transcript correctly: Confirm your screen reading program is up-to-date and try using the reader's 'document reading mode', instead of 'browse mode'. You can also try opening the transcript in Microsoft Word or a plain text editor.
  • The transcript text appears incomplete or inaccurate: Automated transcripts may contain occasional recognition errors. Review the corresponding video content for clarification and, if critical information appears to be missing or incorrect, contact your instructor.
