Device Support: Choosing a Network Connection for Lab and Research Computers

Overview

Instrument and research devices can connect to the Villanova network in two ways: the VU Wired Network or VUPlay. This article defines what counts as an instrument or research device and compares the two options.

What is an instrument or research device?

An instrument or research device is a computer, such as a workstation or controller PC, that is attached to or operates lab instrumentation, or that is used to collect, process, or store research data. These computers are usually not general-purpose user machines. They may run vendor-specific software, and they may have proprietary or uncommon network needs.

Requirements

Compare the options

Consideration VU Wired Network VUPlay
Connection type Wired. The device connects to a network port. Wireless. The device connects without a network port.
Wireless adapter needed No. Yes. The device and its software must support wireless.
Connectivity Allows for communication with other devices on the network, in addition to accessing the internet. Note that firewall configuration may be required. Allows for outbound internet access only. A device on VUPlay cannot connect to other devices on the network, such as printers or other computers. This means remote desktop and file sharing protocols will not work between a VUPlay device and other devices.

Choose an option

  • Choose the VU Wired Network if your device meets the standards and guidelines above and needs to communicate with other lab equipment, printers, or computers, or if it does not support wireless.
  • Choose VUPlay if your device only needs outbound internet access and supports wireless, or if it cannot meet the University device standards and guidelines.
  • If you are unsure, or if your device cannot meet the standards and guidelines but also needs to communicate with other devices, request a consultation. The right choice depends on the full requirements of your lab.
