Fall vs. Spring
There are more registration appointments assigned in the fall for Spring-semester registration than there are in the spring for the following Fall-semester registration. This is because most seniors graduate in the spring and therefore do not register themselves for fall semester courses. Additionally, the incoming first-year freshmen are not assigned registration appointments. The Office of the Registrar will register them for their first-semester classes.
There are eight days of registration appointments in the fall (for Spring-semester registration) and six days of appointments in the spring for the following Fall-semester registration). Knowing where you stand within the total number of registration appointment days may help you realize that we are doing our best to ensure that we have an equitable system.
First Three Semesters
First Semester
Incoming first-year freshmen are not assigned a registration appointment. The Office of the Registrar, with assistance from advising centers, registers all students for their first semester of classes.
Second Semester
In the fall of freshman year, as students prepare to register for spring semester, all first-year students (regardless of earned credits) are assigned a RANDOM registration appointment within the last two registration appointment days.
Third Semester
In the spring semester, as students prepare to register for the upcoming fall (often referred to as "sophomore year"), the RANDOM appointments that were assigned in Second Semester are reversed. First-year students who had the last registration appointments in Second Semester will register first in their class for Third Semester, and vice versa.
After Third Semester
Registration appointments for all students who are not in their first three semesters are assigned in descending order by
earned credit hours.
By maintaining this process from year to year, we do not give preferential treatment to any one population every term, and all students will benefit from the system at some point in their academic career.
