How to Change the Email Address Associated with Your OpenAI / ChatGPT Account

Overview

If you use OpenAI’s ChatGPT or API services for development or research purposes and need to update the email address associated with your OpenAI account, this change must be completed directly within OpenAI’s platform.

Villanova University and University Technology Services (UTS) do not manage or have access to OpenAI user accounts.

Important Notes for Villanova Users

  • OpenAI accounts (including ChatGPT access) are personally managed by the account holder.
  • Updating your email address in ChatGPT will also update the email used for your OpenAI API account.
  • UTS cannot change, recover, or verify OpenAI account information on your behalf.
  • Your account with ChatGPT should align with your user id that use to login to Villanova services. Employees should not be registered with your full Villanova email address. If you are, the instructions below review how to modify this.

How to Update Your Email Address

To change the email associated with your OpenAI / ChatGPT API account:

  1. Sign in to your OpenAI account at https://chat.openai.com.
     
  2. Select Settings from the user menu.

  3. Navigate to Account and confirm if your Email is listed as your User ID and not your full Villanova email address. For example, John Smith would need to use jsmith01@villanova.edu (User ID) instead of john.smith@villanova.edu (Email Address).Displays the Account option in the menu and how to identify the Email setting.
     
  4. If you need to update the value to your user id, click on the value and follow the prompts to confirm the change. You may be asked to re authenticate during this process.

Once confirmed, the new email address will be used for both:

  • ChatGPT access
  • OpenAI API usage tied to that account
