How to Transfer Chat History Between ChatGPT Accounts
Overview
ChatGPT does not provide a built‑in feature to merge accounts or directly transfer chat history from one account to another.
However, OpenAI provides a manual workaround that allows you to export your chat history from one ChatGPT account and retain it as a reference in another ChatGPT account. This process is useful if you are consolidating usage into a single personal account.
Important: This process does not recreate individual conversations in your chat history. Exported chats are preserved only as reference content within a single conversation.
Important Notes for Villanova Users
- Villanova University and University Technology Services (UTS) do not manage ChatGPT accounts or chat history.
- This workaround applies to personal ChatGPT Free, Plus, or Pro accounts only.
- ChatGPT Business accounts do not support data export.
- UTS cannot assist with exporting, importing, or reconstructing ChatGPT conversations.
Before You Begin
- Decide which ChatGPT account you want to keep as your primary account.
- Ensure you can successfully sign in to the account you plan to stop using.
- If both accounts have paid subscriptions, cancel the subscription on the account you will no longer use to avoid duplicate charges.
Step 1: Export Chat History from the Original Account
- Sign in to the ChatGPT account you plan to stop using.
- Request a data export from your account settings.
- Download the exported
.zip file once it becomes available.
- Locate the file named
conversations.json within the export.
Depending on file size, you may need to split the JSON file into smaller files before uploading it later.
Step 2: Import Chat History into Your Primary Account
- Sign in to your primary ChatGPT account (this will likely be your Villanova account).
- Start a new conversation.
- Upload the
conversations.json file (or smaller split files, if needed).
- Use the uploaded content as a read‑only historical reference.
This will not restore individual chats to your chat history list, but it allows you to retain access to previous conversations in a single location.
Limitations of This Process
- Exported chats are not recreated as separate conversations.
- All imported content appears within a single conversation.
- Conversation timestamps, structure, and formatting may differ from the original.
- This is a manual workaround, not a supported migration feature.
ChatGPT Business Accounts
If you are using ChatGPT Business:
- Chat history export is not available.
- Workspace migration or merging follows different rules defined by OpenAI.
