Brightspace: Use Feedback Studio to Mark Papers in Turnitin

Overview

This article explains how to use Turnitin Feedback Studio to mark and provide feedback on student papers submitted to a Turnitin-enabled assignment in Brightspace. Feedback Studio includes tools for inline comments, QuickMarks, strikethrough edits, voice comments, rubrics, and grading.

Instructions

Open Feedback Studio for a Submission

  1. Open your Brightspace course.
  2. Navigate to Assessments > Assignments.
  3. Click the name of the Turnitin-enabled assignment to open the submissions list.
  4. Locate the student submission you want to mark.
  5. Click the Similarity Score or the colored percentage next to the submission to open the paper in Feedback Studio.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)

Note: If a student has not submitted yet, or if Turnitin has not finished processing the file, the Similarity Score may be unavailable. Wait a few minutes and refresh the page.

Add a QuickMark Comment

QuickMarks are reusable comments such as Awkward, Cite, or Run-on.

  1. In Feedback Studio, on the right-hand menu click on the blue QuickMarks icon.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  2. Select a QuickMark set from the drop-down menu.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  3. Drag the desired QuickMark onto the location in the paper where it applies.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  4. To add a comment to a placed QuickMark, click the QuickMark on the paper and type your note.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)

Add an Inline Comment

  1. Click anywhere on the student’s paper where you want to leave a comment.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  2. In the pop-up menu, select the speech bubble icon.
  3. Type your feedback in the comment box.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  4. To edit or delete the comment later, click the comment bubble on the paper, click in the text box to edit the text or click on the trashcan to delete it.

Highlight Text and Attach a Comment

  1. Click and drag to select text in the submission

  2. In the pop-up menu, choose a highlight color.
  3. To attach a comment to the highlighted text, click the comment icon in the same pop-up and type your feedback.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  4. To edit or delete the comment later, click the comment bubble on the paper, click in the text box to edit the text or click on the trashcan to delete it.

Add a Strikethrough

  1. Select the text you want to mark for deletion.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  2. In the pop-up menu, click the strikethrough icon.
  3. The selected text will display with a line through it.
  4. To edit or delete the strikethrough, hover over the struck text and click the trash can icon.

Add a Voice Comment or Overall Text Feedback

  1. Click the pencil and paper icon on the right-hand toolbar to open the Feedback Summary panel.
  2. Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)To leave a written summary, type your feedback in the Text Comment field.
  3. To leave a voice comment, click the microphone icon (you can record up to 3 minutes of audio.)
     
    - The first time you use this feature, you may get a pop-up in your browser to allow access to your microphone. Select Allow while visiting this site.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  4. Click Save when finished.

Score the Paper Using a Rubric or Grading Form

  1. Click the rubric icon on the right-hand toolbar.
  2. If a rubric or grading form has already been attached to the assignment, it will appear in the side panel.
  3. Click the appropriate score or criterion level for each row.
  4. To leave a comment on a specific criterion, click the comment icon next to that row and type your feedback.
  5. The total score from the rubric will appear at the top of the paper and can be applied as the grade.

Note: Rubrics and grading forms must be created and attached to the Turnitin assignment in advance.

Enter or Adjust the Grade

  1. In the upper-right corner of Feedback Studio, click the score field next to the maximum point value.
  2. Enter the numeric grade for the submission.
  3. The grade will sync back to the Brightspace Grades tool once the assignment evaluation is published.

Move Between Student Submissions

  1. Use the left and right arrows at the top of Feedback Studio to move between student papers.
  2. Changes are saved automatically as you move between papers.

Release Feedback to Students

  1. Return to the Brightspace assignment submissions list.
  2. Confirm that grades and feedback are published according to the assignment’s release settings.
  3. Students will see Feedback Studio comments, marks, and rubric scores when they open submission feedback in Brightspace.

Note: By default, Feedback Studio comments become visible to students on the assignment’s Post Date. Verify the Post Date in the Turnitin assignment settings if students report that they cannot see feedback.
