Brightspace: Use Google Drive Files in a Course

You can place files from your Google Drive account into your Brightspace course - within Units/Lessons/Folders, Pages, Assignments, Quizzes, Discussion Boards, and various locations in Brightspace.
Depending on the location, you will be able to: upload files from your Google Drive (which places a copy of the file into Brightspace) OR link to the file (which allows you to update the shared file in real-time so that the class will see those changes when they click on the file)

Instructions

Upload Content from Google Drive into Brightspace

Remember: 

  • You can upload files from Google Drive into Brightspace ONLY in Units/Lessons/Folders. 
  • If you want upload files from Google Drive into Brightspace within a Page, Assignments/Quizzes/Discussion Boards, you will need to download the file from Google Drive to your computer and then upload it from your computer into the file upload section of the Page, Assignment/Quizzes/Discussion Boards.
  1. Find the Unit/Lesson/Folder that you want to upload files into.
  2. Click "Add Existing," then click "Google Drive."

3. Sign in with your Google account.

4. Find the document you want to upload to Brightspace.  Click the file and click upload.  This will place a of copy of the file in your Brightspace course.

 

Link a File from Google Drive in Brightspace

Remember: When you link to a file from Google Drive, students who click on the file will see any changes you made to the file.

  1. Within Assignments, either click on the Google Drive symbol or on the text box toolbar click on Insert Quicklink (link symbol), then select "Google Drive."

                       

Within a Page or Quizzes/Discussion Boards, on the text box toolbar click on Insert Quicklink (link symbol).

2. Find the file you want to link to in Brightspace.  Click on the file, then click "Add."  This adds a link to the file.

(Note: In order for the students to view the file, they need permissions to view the file.  You can either share the file with your students from within Google Drive, or you can make the file viewable with anyone who has the link (see picture below).

Within a Page or Quizzes/Discussion Boards, on the text box toolbar click on Insert Quicklink (link symbol).

  1. Find the file you want to link to in Brightspace. Click on the file, then click "Add." This adds a link to the file.
