NOVAdevice: Considerations Before Switching from Windows to macOS

Tags novadevice

Overview

The NOVAdevice Refresh Program lets you choose a Windows or macOS computer when your device is replaced. If you currently use Windows and are thinking about switching to a Mac, this article explains what to check before you decide.

Instructions

  1. Review the list of applications installed on your current computer. Sign in to the UTS Support Portal, select your name in the upper-right corner, select My Profile, and open your computer from the My Assets section. For more detail, see NOVAdevice: View Your Expected Replacement Date.
  2. Make your own list of the applications that matter most to your work. The asset list shows what is installed, but it cannot tell which programs you rely on, and it may not include web-based tools or programs you only open occasionally (for example, at year end or for reporting).
  3. For each application, confirm whether a macOS version exists.
    • Applications that run in a web browser generally work the same on a Mac.
    • Some Microsoft 365 desktop apps, such as Access, Visio, and Project, are not available for macOS.
    • Some specialized or vendor-provided software is Windows only. Check with the vendor or your department if you are unsure.
  4. If you rely on a Windows-only application, plan how you will access it. UTS does not support virtualization software on macOS (for example, Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion), and Macs with Apple silicon cannot run Windows through Boot Camp. Instead, consider these options:
    • vDesktop: Check whether your application is available through vDesktop, Villanova's virtual desktop service. See the list of available applications on the vDesktop service page.
    • Windows 365 Cloud PC: A Windows 365 Cloud PC provides a full Windows desktop you can use from your Mac. This option has a cost to your department, so review it with your area's finance manager or director before submitting a request.
  5. Review the other peripherals you use, such as monitors, printers, scanners, and specialty devices. These may or may not work with a Mac, so check with the manufacturer if you are unsure. Peripherals are not replaced through the NOVAdevice Refresh Program, so any replacements are the responsibility of your department. You do not need to worry about your docking station: UTS will provide a new dock that works with your Mac.
  6. Consider the learning curve. macOS uses different keyboard shortcuts (for example, Command instead of Ctrl), a different file manager (Finder instead of File Explorer), and different system settings. Allow yourself time to adjust.
