Overview
The Evaluate Submission page allows instructors to evaluate and leave feedback on assignment submissions. The page includes a Submissions List panel and an Evaluation panel.
Use the Evaluation panel to grade submissions, add feedback, annotate files, and publish or save feedback as a draft.
Instructions
Evaluate Assignment Submissions
When evaluating assignment submissions, you can grade learner work and provide feedback directly from the Assignments submission pages.
- Navigate to Assignments.
- Click the assignment you want to evaluate.
- Select the learner submission you want to review.
- Use the Evaluation panel to enter a grade and provide feedback.
- Click Publish to release feedback to the learner, or click Save Draft to save the evaluation and publish it later.
Note: Feedback from Assignments grade items is synchronized with the grade book when the evaluator clicks Update. Published feedback is automatically saved to the grade book.
Note: The grade book does not support drafts, so only published feedback is updated and synced from Assignments, Discussions, and Quizzes to the grade book.
The bulk feedback feature allows you to provide feedback to multiple learners directly within the Assignments submission pages.
- Add and save bulk feedback as a draft if no previous feedback exists.
- Update existing drafts or published evaluations for multiple learners at once.
- Apply feedback selectively or to all learners.
- Publish feedback immediately or save feedback as a draft and release it later.
- Retract published feedback to provide an update to past evaluations.
Note: You cannot publish or save a draft if the Overall Feedback field exceeds 300,000 characters. If the field exceeds the limit or the Grade field contains an invalid grade, a dialog appears stating: "There are one or more errors in the information entered."
Download and Evaluate Assignment Submission Files
If you download user submissions and leave feedback within the files, you can upload them back to the appropriate assignment so they appear as attachments to each user's submission evaluation.
Note: Do not rename the downloaded files after entering feedback.
- Navigate to Assignments.
- Click the Actions drop-down menu and select View Submissions.
- Select submissions and click Download.
- Evaluate the files offline and save your changes.
- Zip the updated files.
- On the Submissions page, click Add Feedback Files and upload the .zip file.
- Select users and click Publish Feedback or click Publish All Feedback.
Note: If you leave feedback in Turnitin, the feedback icon appears in the Turnitin Online Grading column.
Evaluate Video Submissions
- Navigate to Assignments.
- Select an assignment and click View Submissions.
- Select a video submission and click Download.
- Click the video file name to open the evaluation page.
- Enter the Overall Grade and Overall Feedback.
- Click Publish.
If the assignment is linked to a grade item, the Overall Grade is automatically added to the grade book.
Evaluate Using Annotations
If annotations are enabled, you can mark up submissions using highlighting, drawing tools, shapes, and comments directly from the Evaluate Submission page.
- Navigate to Assignments.
- Open an assignment and select a submission.
- Use the annotation toolbar to mark up the submission.
- Click Download to download the original or annotated file.
Tip: Keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl+Z for Undo and Ctrl+Shift+Z for Redo. On macOS, use Command+Z and Command+Shift+Z.
If a learner unenrolls and later re-enrolls in a course, restoration of evaluation depends on publication status and duration of unenrollment.
- Published evaluations are restored if the learner re-enrolls within 30 days.
- Ready for review evaluations are not restored.
- Evaluations are permanently removed after 30 days due to system cleanup.
