Brightspace: Create a Rubric

Overview

Rubrics allow instructors to provide clear assessment criteria, grades, and feedback for learners. This article explains how to create a rubric in Brightspace using the Rubrics tool.

Instructions

To create a new rubric:

  1. In your Brightspace course, navigate to Rubrics by going to Course Admin > Rubrics.
  2. Click New Rubric.
    The New Rubric button.
  3. Enter a Name for the rubric.
  4. Select the rubric Type.
    The Type drop-down menu with options for Analytic or Holistic rubrics.
    • Analytic: Allows you to add multiple criteria within the rubric.
    • Holistic: Uses a single criterion to assess overall achievement.
  5. Select the Scoring type.
    The Scoring drop-down menu with options for Points, No Score, and Custom Points.
    • Points: Each rubric level has the same score for each criterion.
    • No Score: No point values are set.
    • Custom Points: Each level in each criterion can have a unique point value.
  6. Click New Criterion to enter the criterion name, level, and point value.

  7. Add or remove rubric levels and criteria as needed.
    • To add a level, click the Add new level before (+) button.
      The trash bin icon removes the level.
    • To delete a level, click the trash bin icon.
    • To add a criterion, click + Add Criterion.
      The + Add Criterion button appears below the existing criterion lines.
    • To delete a criterion, click Delete Row.
  8. Add a description for each criterion level.
  9. Add Initial Feedback for each level, if needed.

  10. Adjust the Overall Score settings to determine how the overall rubric score maps to achievement levels.
    Overall Score enables you to set a level of achievement based on a submission's overall rubric score.
  11. Expand Options and review the available settings.
    Rubric Options.

    • Score Visibility
    • Description
    • Advanced Availability
  12. When you are finished, click Close.

Note: You can add up to 500 characters to the description of each criterion.

Note: If you need to set minimum or maximum scores for ungraded rubric criteria, do not use a Holistic rubric. That option is not available for Holistic rubric types.
