WeVideo: Create interactive assessments using an existing Mediasite video

Overview

This article provides a guide to creating interactive assessments in WeVideo using a video already created in Mediasite. Faculty can enhance existing video content by adding interactive elements such as pauses, web embeds, PDFs, and graded questions to create a more engaging learning experience for students.

Requirements

  • Please see the device requirements listed in our knowledge article, "WeVideo: Overview".
  • You must have an active WeVideo account
  • You must have an active Mediasite account with content created and available to use
  • If prompted, please have your mobile device handy for a Duo push notification during Villanova single sign-on. For more details, please refer to "Duo: Getting Started".

Instructions

1. Log in to your WeVideo account using the Microsoft Office365 button: https://www.wevideo.com/sign-in

2. Navigate to the Interactive Videos area.

3. Click the Create New Interactive Video button. The wording of this button may be slightly different if you're making your first interactive video.

4. For Video Source, select Mediasite, then single-click on the title of the presentation you want to use.

5. After the video loads, you have the opportunity to rename the video and/or change the thumbnail image. If you don't want to do this, simply click Done.

6. From within the interactions editor page, you can move through the video using the timeline at the bottom of the screen, and choose where you want to add interactions.

Add the interaction type that best supports your lesson goals. Common options include, but are not limited to:

  • Assessment questions (e.g., MCQ, Fill in the Blanks) if you want students to respond to auto-graded prompts during the video
  • Free response if you want students to submit responses in text, image, and/or audio format. Note: this type of interaction must be manually graded by instructors.
  • Discussion board to allow learners to post comments and reply to peers in real-time. Instructors can monitor and delete the post if needed. This interaction is non-graded by default. If points are added, learners who contribute to the discussion receive full credit for this interaction
  • Pause interaction to stop the video and display additional information, directions, or reflection prompts
  • Web embed to display a website, article, interactive map, or other web-based content within the video
  • PDF interaction to display a document that students can review, annotate, and download

💡For more information about working with interactions, please review WeVideo's official guide, "How do I add Interactivity to my WeVideo project?".

7. Configure each interaction as needed. Depending on the interaction type, you may be able to:

  • Add instructional text or insert hyperlinks and images using the rich text editor
  • Add complex equations, symbols, and formulas (accessed via the fx icon in rich text editor)
  • Choose where you want the interaction to be displayed onscreen (it will appear on the left Sidebar by default)
  • Control whether to pause or continue the video for student engagement. By adding an end time to the interaction, learners will have a limited amount of time to respond before the assessment progresses.

8. Click the Review tab, then Preview to review your interactive video and ensure all questions and timings function correctly.

9. Update the Privacy setting to either "Interactive video is public" or "Interactive video is only visible to members of your school/site", depending on your intended audience. Click Save Changes when you're done.

10. After you see the green notification confirming your changes are saved, you can click Save and Exit.

11. Refer to the knowledge article, "WeVideo: Add WeVideo Content to Brightspace" to assign your interactive video assignment to your students in Brightspace.

Known Issues & Troubleshooting

Is the Mediasite video accessible and playable? Confirm that the original Mediasite video is available to My Organization or Everyone, published appropriately, and accessible through your account.

Are you logged into the correct Villanova account? Using a different account may prevent access to WeVideo, Mediasite content, or Brightspace course resources.

Did the video import or load correctly into WeVideo? If the video does not appear or fails to load, try refreshing the page and signing in again.

Are the interactive elements placed at the correct points in the timeline? Preview the video before sharing to make sure interactions appear where you expect them.

Does the embedded content work correctly? If using a website or PDF, confirm that the source content is still available and permitted to load within the interaction.

Are students reporting access issues in Brightspace? If the interactive video was shared through Brightspace, confirm the item is published and visible to students. If, after trying the troubleshooting options above, you still need assistance, please submit a support ticket to the Multimedia Technologies team.
