Mediasite: Getting Started

Overview

Mediasite is a lecture capture tool accessible to all Villanova users. You can post Mediasite presentations on your LMS course page, embed them on a webpage, or share them via a direct link. Mediasite presentations can be created using Hardware Recorders located in select on-campus areas, screen recordings from home with Mediasite Capture, or by uploading video files directly to your MyMediasite account.

Troubleshooting and Known Issues

Problems viewing content

  • Locked Content: Most often, when a user opens a Mediasite link and receives the message, "The presentation is currently unavailable. Please try again later.", it means the presentation is set to Private ("Only Me"). Users should reach out to the person who shared the content with you to confirm it has been unlocked for you to view. To learn more about viewing permissions, please refer to "Mediasite: Understanding "Who Can View?" settings".
  • Old Browser Version: Mediasite is cloud-based, so you must keep your browser up to date to avoid video playback issues. If you’re experiencing playback issues (unrelated to the recording being locked to you), please ensure your browser is updated to the latest version: Tips: Update Your Browser
  • Internet Quality Issue: Low bandwidth and spotty wireless access can disrupt playback. If you typically use a wireless connection but are experiencing playback issues, consider switching to a wired connection if possible. If you encounter problems at home, you might want to contact your Internet service provider to discuss options for increasing your bandwidth.
  • Device type: Be mindful of the device you are using. While it is possible to access Mediasite on a mobile device, it is not recommended for situations that require a strong, stable internet connection (e.g., viewing a live stream or long recording). In these cases, it is advisable to use a wired internet connection.

Problems sharing content

  • Locked Content: Before sharing content with others, please be sure to set the viewing permissions correctly. The standard permission setting for most University lectures and events is "My Organization". To learn how to change your viewing permissions, please refer to "Mediasite: Understanding "Who Can View?" settings".
  • Using the correct link: Mediasite links are very similar in format, so ensure that you're sharing a direct link to an individual presentation or a course channel link. Links containing "vums-web.villanova.edu/mediasite/mymediasite/" redirect to where the content is saved in your personal MyMediasite account and is not accessible to anyone but you.

To learn how to share individual presentations, please refer to "Mediasite: Share a presentation". Alternatively, if you're an instructor who wants to share a full semester of lecture recordings with your students via a course channel link, please refer to "Mediasite: Sharing classroom lecture recordings with your students".
